Hyderabad: With Holi celebrations on, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has cautioned the public against a rise in online scams and digital payment frauds typically reported during the festive season.
TGCSB Director Shikha Goel said cybercriminals were exploiting the surge in online shopping, party bookings, travel reservations and social media exchanges linked to Holi.
“Fraudsters are allegedly circulating fake discount offers on colours, gift hampers, event passes and food deliveries through WhatsApp messages, SMS, emails and social media platforms,” she said.
Officials noted that unsuspecting users are often redirected to fraudulent websites designed to mimic genuine e-commerce platforms.
In several instances, victims were prompted to download malicious mobile applications that could access sensitive information such as OTPs, banking credentials and personal data. Compromised accounts are later used to target the victim’s contacts.
Cyber experts explained that the fraud typically begins with attractive festive greetings or promotional links. Once users click on them and enter payment details or share OTPs, scammers siphon off money or misuse the information for further financial crimes.
The bureau has advised citizens to avoid clicking on unknown links, refrain from installing applications from unverified sources and ensure that purchases are made only through trusted platforms.
Cyber security officials have requested the people to enable a two-factor authentication for online accounts and carefully verify UPI IDs before making payments.
In case of suspected fraud, victims should immediately stop financial transactions, inform their bank or payment service provider and preserve screenshots of suspicious communications.
Complaints can be lodged in 1930, the national cyber fraud helpline or through the official cybercrime reporting portal.
