TGDCA busts illegal sale of codeine cough syrup, tramadol capsules at Ramanthapur medical shop
Drug inspectors from the Telangana Drug Control Administration raided a medical shop in Ramanthapur and detected the alleged illegal sale of habit-forming drugs. Codeine cough syrup and tramadol capsules were seized, while multiple violations of drug regulations were found.
Hyderabad: The drug inspectors from Telangana Drug Control Administration (TGDCA) detected two individuals who were allegedly involved in illegal sale of habitforming drugs, including codeine-containing Tossex cough syrups and tramadol containing spasmo-proxyvon plus capsules, out of a medical shop in Ramanthapur.
The medical shop SVR Medicals in Ramanthapur, Uppal mandal, Medchal-Malkajgiri district was being operated by V. Raju and V. Savitha.
Acting on a tip-off, the TGDCA inspecting teams raided the medical shop premises on Saturday and detected both the individuals were allegedly selling habit-forming medicines indiscriminately. Stocks, along with the records pertaining to habit-forming drugs, were seized during the raid.
Both the individuals were also found to be not adhering to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, including selling such drugs without a prescription from a Registered Medical Practitioner, non-maintenance and failure to produce, sales bills, failure to maintain the Schedule H1 drug register and other violations of the Drugs Rules.
The medical shop records of the medical shop were seized during the raid and a total of twenty bottles of codeine-containing Tossex cough syrup, each of 120 ml, were seized during the raid.
The abuse of habit-forming drugs such as Codeine and Tramadol can lead to serious physical and psychological consequences. These drugs are often misused for their sedative effects, leading to addiction and dependence. Continued misuse or overdose can result in respiratory depression, seizures, coma, and even death.
The illegal sale of habit-forming drugs by a medical shop is a grave offence and is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act with imprisonment of up to two years, DCA added.
