Hyderabad: The city buses operating within the Greater Hyderabad (GH) region will now come with luggage racks following a decision taken by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) to improve passenger convenience.
The facility, commonly seen in long-distance and district services, will now be introduced on a trial basis in 150 city buses. TGSRTC officials said the decision was taken following repeated requests from passengers, particularly students and working professionals who often struggle to carry heavy bags when travelling in crowded buses.
Initially, luggage racks were fitted in two buses on an experimental basis and feedback was collected. Based on the response, the corporation has now begun installing racks in 150 buses as part of the first phase.
Unlike the wider racks seen in district buses, these will be designed with a lower height and compact dimensions to suit city bus conditions and frequent passenger movement. The installation work has been entrusted to the RTC’s Bus Body Building Unit at Miyapur.
Officials estimate that the cost of fitting racks in each bus will be around Rs 15,000 and the modified buses are expected to hit the city roads soon. After studying passenger usage and practicality amid peak-hour rush, the corporation will take a decision on extending the facility to all city buses in Hyderabad. Officials believe the low-cost initiative will significantly ease commuter discomfort and receive a positive response.
Discount on AC buses from March 1:
In another relief measure ahead of the summer season, TGSRTC has announced a 30 per cent discount on AC bus fares operating within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits from March 1 to May 31.
The discount will apply to 90 AC buses, including 50 Pushpak airport services and 40 other AC services. With the ticket fare cut-down, AC bus fares will now be on par with Express and Deluxe Bus ticket fares during the summer period.
TGSRTC Managing Director Y Nagi Reddy said the decision was taken keeping in view the difficulties faced by passengers during the scorching summer months. He further requested citizens to make the best use of the discounted AC services and enjoy a comfortable, cool and safe journey.
