New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s energy, dynamism, and willingness to engage as a “prime asset” for India’s global presence, arguing that these attributes deserve greater backing. His remarks come amid escalating criticism from his own party, which has accused the Modi government of alienating India on the world stage with its foreign policy.

In an article published in The Hindu, Tharoor detailed how the diplomatic outreach following India’s response, dubbed “Operation Sindoor” to the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack symbolized national resolve and effective communication. “The diplomatic outreach following ‘Operation Sindoor’ was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. It affirmed that India, when united, can project its voice with clarity and conviction on international platforms,” he said while leading a multi-party delegation to the United States and four other countries.

Tharoor, who headed one of seven all-party parliamentary delegations sent to global capitals, underscored that the diverse composition of the group, featuring MPs from various political parties, states, and faiths sent a potent message about a unified Indian stance on national security and counterterrorism. He stressed that this unity bolstered the credibility of India’s message in international meetings, whether engaging with the President of Guyana or the US Vice-President.

Highlighting the balance between military decisiveness and diplomatic finesse, Tharoor noted that India meticulously communicated the strategic rationale behind its measured strikes against terrorist infrastructure emphasizing a commitment to self-defence while safeguarding civilians and even avoiding harm to Pakistani military facilities. He cited Colombia’s reversal from initially offering condolences for alleged civilian casualties to subsequently affirming support for India’s sovereign right to self-defence—as a clear diplomatic win stemming from detailed and persuasive engagements.

Recalling discussions in Washington, D.C., Tharoor also mentioned that despite a concurrently present Pakistani delegation, US representatives echoed India’s concerns and pressed for decisive action against terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Amid these developments, Tharoor’s statements on the India-Pakistan conflict and the associated diplomatic outreach diverge from the mainstream Congress narrative, a stance that has drawn criticism and jibes from within his party. Yet, he affirmed that despite his differences with parts of the party leadership, the Congress, its values, and its workers remain very dear to him.
