The Turmeric Revolution: How CV Hydro’s Soilless System Is Poised to Power India’s Exports
Led by Navy veteran Lt Cdr Viswa Prakash Chandrasekharan (Retd), the pioneer of soilless cultivation in India since 2008, CV Hydro has been teaching to grow residue-free, export-grade turmeric. Their Mission Haldrak, formerly known as Mission Turmeric launched in 2021, is building India’s reputation for clean-label, high-quality turmeric.
CV Hydro's Mission Haldrak. An Audacity of Hope. Creating Agriveers
Hyderabad: India produces over 75% of the world’s turmeric but exports just 13% largely due to quality issues, pesticide residues, and inconsistent supply. A quiet transformation led by Palakkad-based CV Hydro now promises to change this narrative.
Building a Movement, One Grower at a Time
Between 2021 and 2025, CV Hydro trained over 400 individuals and onboarded 100+ growers into its Practical Learning Program.
18 bootcamps have attracted agri-entrepreneurs, farmers, and professionals from non-agri backgrounds.
2 commercial projects have been delivered and 4 more signed, with 3 scheduled for 2025-26 and 1 set to begin in 2026.
In 2023, a student grower achieved a record 9.65 kg yield from a single growbag, surpassing CV Hydro’s R&D benchmark of 8.17 kg.
In 2025, CV Hydro announced a bold buyback offer of ₹200/kg for qualifying residue-free dry turmeric or powder — securing price stability for participating growers.
Why Soilless Turmeric Matters
Compared to traditional turmeric, CV Hydro’s method ensures:
Pesticide & heavy metals-free
No microbiological contamination
Higher curcumin content
99% harvest saleable – with almost no waste
Min 30 to max 80+ tons of wet turmeric yield per acre
Results validated by Eurofins Labs
It also uses 50-55% less water, prevents soil degradation, and meets rising global demand for clean-label ingredients with traceability.

24 Years of Expertise Driving Innovation
Lt Cdr Chandrasekharan, with 24 years of hydroponics R&D, has developed proprietary nutrient formulas like HydroNutes, tailored for Indian climate and conditions.
CV Hydro’s training ecosystem includes:
3-day bootcamps
90-day practical training masterclass
9-month remote consulting support through the Growers Practical Learning Program
9-month on-farm commercial training
Commercial consulting for high-volume growers
Raw, uncut video bundles from the first bootcamp for self-paced learning
Interest Beyond Traditional Farmers
Although the initial investment is higher than traditional turmeric farming, this model is drawing attention not only from farmers but also from urban professionals, entrepreneurs, and NRIs who want to adopt clean, scalable agri-practices. CV Hydro provides a practical, transparent, and profitable path into the turmeric export ecosystem.
Seeking Institutional Support
Despite closely aligning with the National Turmeric Board’s vision, CV Hydro has yet to receive formal recognition.
“Our work from 2020–2025 already fulfills many of the board’s objectives,” says Chandrasekharan. “But we haven’t been contacted or acknowledged — and we don’t even know how to reach them.”
This gap underscores a broader problem: grassroots innovation often operates in silos, away from formal agri-policy circles.
Mission Haldrak: Unstoppable
Undeterred, CV Hydro continues to build its community-led mission. Growers share real-time data and learnings, building a transparent, high-trust ecosystem.
“This is about creating a lasting legacy,” says Chandrasekharan. “India must not just be the world’s largest turmeric producer — we must also be the most respected.”
With increasing global demand for clean, residue-free turmeric, India’s next export revolution might already be growing — quietly, soillessly, and one growbag at a time.
