Hanamkonda: A B Tech third year student and an Intermediate student were caught by the police in the wee hours of Sunday while they were trying to escape after a burglary in the women’s hostel of the SR University at Ananthasagar village under Hasanparthy police station limits here. One of them was caught from a well, reportedly after he jumped in while trying to hide.
According to the police, three students, two of them BTech students from Suryapet town, had formed a gang and turned to burglary. On Sunday night, they broke into the women’s hostel on the SR University campus despite the presence of security guards and allegedly stole laptops and mobile phones of the hostel inmates. With security guards following them after the girls in the hostel raised an alarm and the police also being alerted, the youngsters ran off into the dark.
A few hours later, locals found a youngster inside a well in Ananthasagar village near the campus and alerted the police, who reached the spot and pulled him out. It was then that they came to know that he was one from the trio who fled from the campus. Though it was initially suspected that he fell into the well, the youngster told the police that he had jumped into the well to hide himself.
Students alleged that 14 cell phones and six laptops were stolen in the last three days and said thieves had got into the hostel by breaking open the bathroom doors.
Hasanparthy Station House Officer (SHO) Narender said two of the gang were caught, while efforts were on to nab the third gang member.
“They are from Suryapet. The BTech student caught by us was studying in an engineering college in Tamil Nadu,” he said.
