The San Diego Zoo is celebrating the birth of a rare Southern white rhino – a 125-pound baby girl.
The calf was born August 22 to first-time mom Kianga and father J Gregory. The zoo said Kianga is proving to be an excellent, attentive mother.

“The rhino calf has just begun exploring her home at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. She is very adventurous, not afraid of much because she knows she has her mom at her back at all times,” Matt Gelvin, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo told a news agency.
The baby girl has not been named yet and she’ll continue to nurse during her first year of life. When full grown, at around three years of age, she could weigh up to 5,000 pounds.
Watch her video and you surely will be cheered for the day:
The San Diego Zoo, since 1972, has been successfully breeding the threatened species in captivity. Over the years, 104 white rhinos have been born at the zoo, adding to the population of just 18,000 left in the world.
