Medak: With the movement of a tiger reported in the neighbouring Kamareddy district, forest officials in Medak have put residents of villages located close to the Kamareddy border on high alert.
A forest team led by Forest Range Officer (FRO) Vidya Sagar visited Naskal, Nandagokul, Chelmada and other villages in the Ramayampet area on Tuesday and created awareness among farmers and local residents.
A tiger was spotted in Kamareddy district about five months ago, in July this year. Forest officials had then said that the animal had strayed into the district from the Mancherial forest area, but disappeared soon after.
Last Sunday, the tiger killed a couple of calves in the Machareddy forest area in Kamareddy district. After collecting pug marks, forest officials in Kamareddy identified the animal as a young male. The renewed movement of the tiger in the neighbouring district prompted Medak forest officials to conduct awareness programmes in villages located close to the Kamareddy border.
Speaking to Telangana Today, FRO Vidya Sagar said farmers had been advised not to move alone during the evenings. He said farmers and cattle herders were also asked not to venture into forest areas until the tiger retreats into the Kawal Tiger Reserve. They were further advised not to keep cattle away from their homes.
Meanwhile, forest officials have intensified patrolling in vulnerable areas and kept the police on alert.
