Sangareddy: Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said it was time that Opposition parties came together on to a common platform to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 elections.
Responding to a question during an interaction with GITAM University students at Rudram, the Congress leader said, “Modi government has several failures to its credit including the farm laws that were enacted without any consultation, growing unemployment rate and mismanagement of Covid pandemic.” He pointed out that BJP had got just 31 per cent and 37 per cent of votes in the 2014 and 2019 elections respectively. “Since the remaining votes were divided among the 45 political parties in the country, it made BJP’s job easy,” he said.
When asked why West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was so unhappy with Congress of late, the MP said Congress had taken an unwise decision in not extending support to the TMC in the recent Assembly elections. He said he was, however, confident of the Congress overcoming all the challenges to create a common platform for the Opposition parties well ahead of the 2024 elections.
Observing that the present disposition at the Centre was polluting people’s minds, he said, “Disinformation has infected the minds of the people so much that it would be difficult to change their mindset now. The only way we can correct the situation is by defeating the BJP.”
When asked by a student what change he would bring to the Constitution if he gets a chance, Tharoor said he would opt for Presidential system of governance. He said he would bat for independent powers for judiciary, legislature, and executive in India. The MP said he was shocked to know that the legislators in China, which is not a democracy, had more powers than in democratic India.
