Hyderabad: As Diwali is approaching, many find a way to clean and dispose of all the scrap that has been lying around in the house for a long time. Well, this year, instead of just disposing of the scrap, let’s ‘Gift Your Scrap’.

Bhumi NGO along with Give India has come up with this new campaign called ‘Gift Your Scrap’ where one can collect their dry scrap and ‘sell’ it to a scrap collector associated with the NGO – who will deliver the value amount of the dry scrap.

“The scrap donor can then choose to either keep the money or donate it to Bhumi NGO through Give India. This donated money will then be turned into scholarships for underprivileged students,” shares Swapna K, a volunteer at Bhumi NGO. The donors can also ensure the right use of funds by following Bhumi NGO on social media platforms or through Give India.

The idea emerged during the Hyderabad floods last year and soon it was reworked into ‘Gift Your Scrap’.

“During the floods, a woman sold the collected scrap from several houses in her apartment and raised some funds for the flood-affected ones. That is when we thought this idea can be worked for several other causes as well – as it helps us direct our scrap towards recycling it and also raise funds for any concerned cause,” Swapna shares. The scrap is collected and recycled by a company called ScrapQ.

However, before delivering the scrap, the donors have to fill a Google form with the details of the dry scrap – newspapers, cartons, electronic gadgets and so on and also mention the approximate weight of the scrap. (https://bit.ly/DonateHouseholdScrapForSocialCause)

“We usually suggest the donors collect scrap of 10 kg or more so it might be beneficial for both the donor and the collector. As the scrap collector makes an effort to collect them directly from the households, we prefer a larger quantity. We also give suggestions on what other scrap can be included for the ones who have less than 8-10 kg,” she explains.

Bhumi NGO is also looking for ways to make the campaign a societal practice. “Due to the pandemic induced safety protocols, we had to hold plans for making it a larger event. Well, now that we are working on getting the required permission, we look forward to involving several apartments, colonies and so on towards the initiative,” Swapna shares, adding that a large number of women have shown interest in the campaign and have also been a major chunk of donors towards the initiative.
