Hyderabad: In a significant development ahead of elections in five States that could have national level repercussions, the top leadership of the Left parties – CPI and CPM – called on Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to seek his support in the fight for ‘BJP Mukht Bharat’.
Both the Left parties were of the view that there was a dire need for the emergence of an alternate leadership at the national level as the Congress had utterly failed to lead the Opposition and evict the BJP from the Centre. They proposed for bringing together like-minded progressive forces on to the same platform to fight against the anti-people and anti-farmer policies of the BJP government at the Centre, according to reliable sources.
These issues came up for discussion when the top leadership of both the Left parties met TRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao at Pragathi Bhavan here on Saturday.
The Chief Minister had separate meetings with the leaders from both the Left parties where they discussed national politics and development of Telangana among other issues. They are learnt to have agreed to convene another meeting soon and discuss the way forward.
The CPM national leaders are attending the three-day Central Committee meeting which started in Hyderabad on Friday, while the CPI leaders arrived in Hyderabad to participate in the national convention of All India Youth Federation (AIYF) which is affiliated to the CPI party. Chandrashekhar Rao extended a warm welcome to the leaders of both the Communist parties upon their arrival. The leaders from TRS as well as both the Left parties have maintained that the meetings were just a courtesy visit.
Sources said the Left parties strongly opposed the hate and divisive politics being propagated by the BJP which could pose a threat to the national integrity. They were critical that rather than extending support to the developing States like Telangana, the Centre was resorting to obstructive politics against the federal spirit of the nation.
The leaders of Left parties are learnt to have opined that Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised curtains to a new drama in Punjab with accusation of security breach ahead of the polls. They felt that the accusations were being made against the Punjab government only to save the face of the BJP leadership in the wake of severe opposition from farmers for the party in the State. In Uttar Pradesh, they predict strong anti-BJP wind which will elevate the Samajwadi Party to power.
The CPM delegation was led by the party national general secretary Sitaram Yechury, with senior leaders including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Tripura former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, CPM central politburo members Ramachandran Pillai, Bala Krishnan, MA Baby and others. Following the meeting, the Kerala Chief Minister thanked his Telangana counterpart for ‘warm welcome and fruitful interaction’ through his Twitter post.
The CPI delegation was led by the party national general secretary D Raja, CPI Parliamentary party leader and MP Binoy Viswam, Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan, Telangana State general secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, State secretaries Palla Venkat Reddy and K Sambasiva Rao among others.
Ministers KT Rama Rao, Mohd Mahmood Ali, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Telangana State Planning Board vice-chairman B Vinod Kumar, Rajya Sabha member J Santosh Kumar, MLC Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, TRS general secretary Sravan Kumar Reddy and other TRS leaders, welcomed the Left party leaders and participated in the meetings.
