Hyderabad: Justice B Vijaysen Reddy of the Telangana High Court directed the police department to file the departmental enquiry report within ten days on the alleged police harassment and torture leading to death of Shiva Kumar Chary in Bowenpally police station.
The deceased person’s wife Ramannagari Pavani filed a case questioning the inaction of the department against the police officers concerned. The petitioner submitted that the deceased had lost his driver job due to the pandemic and he joined painting works. The police had summoned him to the station and tortured him based on a complaint on loss of one tola gold on March 10 and 11. The police released him with the condition that he had to return the gold by March 15.
The petitioner complained that her husband told her about the humiliation he was facing after being branded as a thief and fear about facing the police torture again over phone before committing suicide. The petitioner’s counsel told the court that the police had sought multiple opportunities to submit their response without any result. The judge then directed the police department to submit its response within 10 days.
Open access to court proceedings A two-judge panel, comprising Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice A Rajashekar Reddy, ordered notice to the Law Department and Bar Council of Telangana, along with High Court Registry, in a public interest litigation case on granting open access to court proceedings. Srilekha filed this case as party in person seeking directions for open access to the court proceedings. The panel adjourned the case to December 1 for the response of the government, Advocates Association and the High Court Registry.
