Mahabubnagar: Considering the favourable conditions for cultivation of vegetables and fruits, District Collector S Venkat Rao directed the officials to transform Hanwada mandal into a horticulture hub in the district.
He wanted the officials to motivate the farmers in Mahabubnagar and Hanwada mandals to cultivate vegetables and not confine to paddy cultivation.
Observing Friday as Watering Day, the District Collector watered trees and saplings on the roadsides on Hanwada – Vepur route here. During the exercise, he inspected the bitter gourd, ridge gourd and onion cultivation being taken up by Tirupataiah, a farmer on the outskirts of Hanwada.
During his interaction with the farmer, the District Collector asked him on the extent of area in which vegetables were being cultivated, expenditure incurred, organic farming practices and other aspects.
In reply, Tirupataiah informed that many farmers were taking up vegetables cultivation in the surrounding areas. Impressed with the farmers response, the District Collector instructed officials to promote horticulture farming in the mandal extensively.
Later, he inspected the forest rejuvenation and other works under progress in the Vepur Reserve forest. In the last two years, natural forest was developed in the region without much expenditure, District Forest Officer Gangi Reddy informed to the Collector.
