Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has decided to set up 33 medical colleges across the State against the three medical colleges that were set up during the last 60 years, said Health Minister T Harish Rao on Monday. After formation of the State, 12 medical colleges were sanctioned at different places. Of these, four colleges at Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet and Nalgonda were already functioning, he said during question hour in the Assembly.
Admissions in eight other colleges would commence from 2022-23 academic year. National Medical Council application formalities were completed and infrastructure works were under progress, the Minister said. The Government has also decided to set up eight more colleges and upgradation of attached hospitals at Asifabad, Bhupalpally, Vikarabad, Sircilla, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Karimnagar and Khammam, he said while replying to TRS legislator K Chandar.
Every year, nearly 2,000 MBBS seats were being added in the State. During 2014, there were 700 seats in the State and they have now been increased to 2,850 seats, the Minister said, adding there were 934 PG medical seats (including NIMS). The State Government has been according top priority to medical and health sector. Accordingly, 27,000 beds were upgraded to oxygen beds and 26 liquid oxygen tanks were set up at 26 hospitals across the State, he said.
At NIMS hospital, there were 200 ICU beds and 100 more beds were ready for inauguration. In addition to these, 100 more beds would be ready by next month, the Minister said. When TRS legislator Marri Janardhan Reddy asked about the dearth of dead bodies in teaching hospitals, the Minister said joint meeting would be convened with Home department shortly to discuss the issue.
A small amendment was required in the rules to facilitate handing over unknown bodies to teaching hospitals for training purposes, he said.

Health Minister Harish Rao said Central Government was discriminate towards Telangana in sanctioning medical colleges. While, 171 government medical colleges were sanctioned to other States, not a single medical college was sanctioned to Telangana, he said.
The Central Governments extends Rs.200 crore as grants for each medical college. When Telangana Government appealed for similar grants to set up 33 medical colleges, there was no response from the Centre, he said in the Assembly.
