Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao expressed grief over the death of former MLA and erstwhile Khammam Zilla Parishad former chairman
Hyderabad: Senior TRS leader and former MLA Chekuri Kashaiah passed away at a private hospital in Khammam on Tuesday morning. He was 86 and was reportedly undergoing treatment for cancer.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, expressing grief over the death of the former MLA, said Kashaiah was a freedom fighter and a selfless and progressive politician from Telangana who made his mark in the Khammam politics. The State had lost a senior and honest politician in the death of Kashaiah, he said, extending his deepest condolences to the family members of the late legislator.
Born in 1933 at Takkellapadu village of erstwhile Madhira taluk, Kasaiah at 13 took part in the freedom struggle and met Mahatma Gandhi at Madhira railway station in 1946 with thousands of others. Kasaiah, who graduated from Nizam College, Hyderabad, served as a teacher before joining politics at former Chief Minister late Jalagam Vengala Rao’s behest. He was elected Kothagudem MLA on the Congress ticket in 1972.
Later, he was elected Paloncha MLA on the Janata Party ticket in 1978. He served as Zilla Parishad chairman of erstwhile Khammam from 1987 to 1992. He quit active politics in 2002 and set up a charity organisation, Guru Dakshina Foundation, with retired teachers. Kasaiah, as part of his charity work, established a 100-bed Nature Cure Hospital, yoga centre, old-age home and a library in Khammam.
