TRS takes lead in postal ballots for Huzurabad bypolls

Hyderabad: The ruling TRS took the lead in postal ballot counting during the counting of votes which has begun for Huzurabad Assembly bypolls at 8 am at SRR College in Karimnagar. TRS candidate Gellu Srinivas is leading with 503 votes of total 723 postal ballots polled. While the first round of counting of votes polled through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has begun, the fate of major parties in the high-stakes bypoll is likely to be decided by 11 am.
In the postal ballots, BJP was polled 159, Congress received 32 votes, 15 votes were polled for others and 14 were declared invalid.

However, BJP candidate Eatala Rajender gained 166 votes majority in the first round of EVMs. While BJP was polled 4,610 votes, TRS received 4,444 votes and Congress got only 119 votes. A total 22 rounds of counting will be held to declare the final results.
The bye-election was necessitated after Eatala Rajender had quit TRS following his removal from the State Cabinet over land grabbing allegations. Both TRS and BJP launched a high-octane campaign and left no stone unturned to win the election. The voters too turned up in large number with record turnout of 86.66 pe cent.
