Hyderabad: Fraudsters now have a tough challenge to overcome while churning out fake certificates. A new online verification system is being put in place by the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) to curb the menace of fake certificates in the State.
Just like the security features available in currency notes, certificates issued by the universities come with features like logo, watermark, a particular paper thickness and a unique code number. Despite these security features, unscrupulous persons are tampering with the certificates and making fake ones.
To tackle this menace, the Council is putting in place a full-fledged online certificate verification system where all marks memos and other certificates issued by the universities in the State will be hosted on a server. Employers or companies can verify the genuineness of the certificates online using the hall ticket number of the candidate. This service will be available on user charges which will be shared between the TSCHE and the university concerned.
Currently, employers and foreign universities verify the veracity of the certificates submitted by the employees or students by writing to the university officials who, after manually verifying the certificates, issue a letter on the authenticity of the certificates which is usually a cumbersome process.
As part of the new process, a database with details of all students who passed various undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes from the universities in the last 20 years will be made available online. This apart, plans are also on to link this new system with the digital lockers initiative of the union government.
“Initially, details of certificates of the students who passed various courses in the last 20 years will be made available online for verification. This new system will help employers or companies and foreign universities to quickly verify the veracity of certificates and to identify fake certificates,” TSCHE Chairman Prof R Limbadri said.
Officials of the TSCHE are also seeking support from the Telangana State Police for coming up with a permanent solution for stopping fake certificates.
Accordingly, the Council has scheduled a meeting on Monday with Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of the State universities with officials of the Telangana State Police, which will be attended by Director-General of Police M Mahender Reddy.
