Hyderabad: Tension prevailed on Monday afternoon when local residents staged a protest alleging negligence by the electricity department, which they claimed led to the death of six people during the Sri Krishnashtami chariot procession at Gokul Nagar in Ramanthapur.

The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), M D Musharraf Faruqui, along with other electricity department and senior police officials, visited the mishap spot for inspection.

During their visit, residents blocked the officials, alleging sheer negligence on the part of the electricity department. They said that cable wires had been lying low, with damaged wires dangling at several places, but officials failed to take up repairs, maintenance, or preventive measures that could have averted the tragedy.

Musharraf Faruqui, who expressed grief over the incident, said he would take up the matter with the government and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to discuss ex-gratia for victims’ families and order an inquiry. He assured all possible assistance to the kin of the deceased and the injured.

Meanwhile, residents also attempted to take out a rally in protest against the electricity department from the accident site. However, the police, who reached the spot in large numbers, stopped the march and brought the situation under control.
