Hyderabad: As coastal India tackles the impact of Cyclone Yaas, social media has already found two heroes to talk about.
Even as videos and photographs of how the cyclone uprooted life along the coast are flooding social media timelines and newsfeeds, Twitter has got a hashtag #CycloneMenOfIndia, with many people tweeting how two men have led the fight against Yaas.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Director General Satya Narayan Pradhan are the men in the limelight. With both being from Odisha, one of the States that is bearing the brunt of the cyclone, many are calling the Stars of Odisha as well.
Both the agencies, IMD and NDRF have in fact played a crucial role in the way official machineries in States along the coast have responded the cyclone and saved several lives. Dr. Mohapatra is already known for accurately predicting the path of the cyclonic storm Phailin that hit Odisha in 2013. Around half a million people were evacuated to safe places before the landfall of the cyclone, also called as the biggest modern day evacuation in India. His predictions and timely decisions have helped authorities act swiftly while IMD’s weather prediction mechanism was modernised under his guidance, using which damage that could have been caused by other cyclones like Hudhud (2014) and Vardah (2016) was minimised to a large extent.
NDRF DG Pradhan is recognized for his various innovations in the use of information technology in policing. The NDRF has deployed 112 teams in the coastal districts of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and also Jharkhand.
Twitterati are appreciating the contributions of both men with praise and hashtags on social media.
