With the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, coming into effect from May 26, there are wide number of speculations around Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Many anticipated that the media giants might get banned, and are on a look to find their second home for their continuous scrolling finger points.
Just to give a brief of what exactly is happening, the Government of India released a set of IT Rules in February and gave the platforms three month duration to comply with the guidelines.
The new guidelines issued by the Centre mandated a grievance redressal system for over the top (OTT) and digital portals in the country. Regarding this development, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said though the government welcomes criticism and the right to dissent, “but it is very important for the users of social media to have a forum to raise their grievance against the misuse of social media”.
The key points of the new guidelines are- the social media platforms will require a chief compliance officer to ensure the rules, nodal contact person and also a resident grievance officer to perform the grievance redressal mechanism as mentioned.
So as far now, it is quite unclear where are we heading towards but netizens are already on their way back to reminiscing their 90s days. With the unconfirmed news of Facebook and Twitter ban, there is already a trending pool of hashtags like #FacebookBan, #TwitterBan. Alongside these hashtags, somehow the old Orkut was mentioned and since then #Orkut was trending with thousands of tweets.
For the uninitiated, Orkut was the first social networking platform for many Indians. It was founded in 2004 and named after Orkut Büyükkökten, an employee of Google. The website was most popular in India and Brazil and got momentum in 2008. For many, it started with chatting, dating and then going a long way with it. The website was shut down in 2014 but it still has an emotional and personal connect to quite a lot of ‘90s kid’.
Reminiscing those days and the experiences, people started sharing memes and jokes. Take a look of how far people went-

With many supporting the uncertain move of banning the social media platforms, one has to agree how through this platforms one can connect, voice their opinions, share ideas, be it a celebrity or a layman. Also, keeping in mind the recent Covid-19 relief and efforts through the network of social media, these platforms are definitely helping a lot in this trying times.
