Two drugs falsely sold as nutraceuticals/food products seized

DCA teams discovered stocks of Pedi Zinc Syrup (Zinc Gluconate Syrup), manufactured by Micro Nutritions, Exhibition Road, Hyderabad, in Sirpur, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district. The product was being falsely marketed as a food product or nutraceutical with health benefits.

Hyderabad: The Drug Control Administration (DCA), Telangana has seized two drugs, Pedi Zinc Syrup and Ferrous-XT Tablets, being manufactured by two different companies in Hyderabad and falsely sold as food products or nutraceuticals that claimed to have medical benefits.

The DCA teams detected stocks of Pedi Zinc Syrup (Zinc Gluconate Syrup), manufactured by Micro Nutritions, Exhibition Road, Hyderabad, in Sirpur, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district. The product was being falsely sold as a food product or nutraceutical with health benefits.

In the second raid, the DCA teams detected Ferrorus-XT tablets (Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid and Zinc Tablets) circulating in the market. The product was found to be manufactured by Kencure Pharmaceuticals, S N Puram, Road no-10, Medchal-Malkajgiri district and marketed by Syrus Pharma, Shankara Kranthi apartments, Kavadiguda as a food product.

“The products were falsely manufactured under a ‘food license (FSSAI license)’ and falsely claimed to be food products/nutraceuticals. According to the label composition of these products, they are classified as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The products must be manufactured only under a ‘drug license’ issued under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, adhering strictly to the ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ (GMP) outlined in Schedule-M of the Drugs Rules. Additionally, it must meet the quality standards prescribed in the ‘Indian Pharmacopoeia’ (IP) as mandated,” the DG, TSDCA, V B Kamalsan Reddy said.

The drugs that are falsely manufactured and sold under a food license are not produced in accordance with ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ (GMPs) and often fail to meet the quality standards prescribed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). Such products pose serious risks to patients’ health and may have severe implications, the DCA, Telangana added.
