UK-based thalassemia survivor shares life journey with young patients in Hyderabad

UK resident Ajay Gandhi, who has lived with thalassemia major for decades, shared his life journey with young patients and parents at the TSCS in Hyderabad. He spoke about treatment, family support and perseverance while encouraging patients to pursue their dreams.

Hyderabad: For decades, 57-year-old UK resident Ajay Gandhi lived with Thalassemia Major, a chronic blood disorder. On Monday, Gandhi visited the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) in Hyderabad to share his life journey with hundreds of young patients and their parents.

Organised at the TSCS auditorium, the event featured discussions about Gandhi’s childhood, career, marriage, and the rigorous medical routine that allowed him to build a fulfilling life.

Gandhi, during the course of interaction, which was also attended by TSCS president Dr Chandrakant Agarwal and Secretary Dr Suman Jain, pointed out that his condition is merely a part of his life rather than its definition. He credited his longevity to disciplined treatment, family support, and perseverance.

Gandhi praised TSCS for offering comprehensive, free-of-cost facilities under one roof, noting that families frequently travel over 1,000 kilometres to access their care. “I hope my story gives every patient the confidence to dream, pursue their ambitions, and face the future with courage,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Agarwal said that Gandhi’s firsthand experience with the medical condition provided children living with thalassemia and sickle cell anemia and their families with a renewed sense of hope.
