Hyderabad: Tensions flared in and around the Telangana State Level Police Recruitment Board offices at Lakdikapul in Hyderabad on Monday as unemployed youth staged a massive protest demanding an immediate increase in the number of vacancies in the upcoming police recruitment drive from the proposed 5,000 to 20,000.

Led by the Telangana Unemployed Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the SI and Police Constable Candidates’ JAC, the unemployed youth attempted to gain entry into the offices of the Police Recruitment Board to register their protest.

The demonstration follows the State government’s recent announcement regarding the recruitment of 5,000 police personnel. Job aspirants, who have been preparing for the examinations for several years, expressed frustration and labelled the figure of 5,000 posts as “symbolic” and insufficient to address widespread unemployment in Telangana. The job aspirants argued that after two-and-a-half years, the State government had issued a notification for only 5,000 posts.

With the situation escalating, police personnel were deployed to manage the crowd. In a swift operation, police detained several protesters and forcibly removed them from the site, taking them in waiting police vans to nearby police stations. The police action drew criticism, with student groups condemning the treatment of the youth and vowing to continue their protests.

The key demands of the job aspirants include increasing the total police vacancies from the proposed 5,000 to 20,000 posts, honouring the commitment to fill 2 lakh government jobs, and the immediate release of the long-pending job calendar to reduce uncertainty.
