Karimnagar/Mancherial: Unseasonal rains coupled with gale damaged standing crops in the erstwhile Karimnagar district, while one person was killed in a wall collapse in Mancherial.
On Friday evening, different parts of Karimnagar, Jagtial, Peddapalli and Rajanna-Sircilla districts received rainfall. While maize crops fell to the ground due to strong winds in many places, mango orchards were also damaged. Meanwhile, paddy, which is in the final stage, also suffered damage. While maize crops were damaged in a big way in Choppadandi area, paddy was soaked in rainwater in the Choppadandi market yard.
About 20 sheep died when a cattle shed collapsed due to heavy winds in Bhupathipur of Sultanabad mandal. 15 sheep sustained injuries as well. Shepherd Lachaiah had put up a steel roofed shed for his sheep. However, the sheep died as the shed collapsed due to strong winds. Lachaiah suffered a damage of Rs.3 lakh.
Meanwhile, both Mancherial and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts saw light to moderate rains on Friday evening, disrupting power and damaging crops. According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, Mancherial district saw an average rainfall of 15.5 mm. Mancherial mandal received the highest rainfall by 47.3 mm, followed by Luxettipet mandal which had 28.4 mm of rainfall. Nennal, Dandepalli, Hajipur, Kasipet, Thandur, Bellampalli and Naspur mandals recorded anywhere between 18 mm and 26 mm of rainfall.
Meanwhile, the average rainfall of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district was measured to be 4.9 mm. Rebbena mandal had the highest rainfall at 27.8 mm. Kagaznagar mandal received 13.8 mm of rainfall, while Chintalamanepalli mandal registered 10.5 mm of rainfall. Both Dahegaon and Tiryani mandal recorded 8.9 mm and 6.5 mm of rainfall respectively.
Standing maize and paddy crops were flattened due to the unseasonal rains coupled with hailstorms in the two districts. Mango orchards were damaged. Officials said that crop damage was yet to be assessed. Supply of power was disrupted for several hours, causing inconvenience to people.
Chandekar Daulath, 79, a retired employee of Sirpur Paper Mills limited died on the spot when the wall of his house collapsed on him at Naugaon basti in Kagaznagar mandal.
