Hyderabad: The newly established government junior colleges (GJCs) in the State are struggling without regular teaching and non-teaching staff positions. Despite 18 new GJCs being launched, with eight alone in the academic year 2024-25, not a single post has been sanctioned so far.
The Intermediate Education department had recently submitted proposals for the sanctioning of 273 posts in these colleges. Though the file, according to sources, reached the State Cabinet meeting held on June 23, it was not brought up for discussion and hence no decision was arrived at.
Classes in such colleges, according to sources, either remained non-operational or were run by staff who were temporarily deputed from other institutions. However, in sharp contrast, the GJCs sanctioned in the Chief Minister’s constituency and certain other ministers’ constituencies saw swift approvals of posts.
For instance, the GJC in Dudyal mandal in the Chief Minister’s Kodangal constituency has recently been granted 20 teaching and 11 non-teaching posts. Similarly, the colleges at Bomraspet and Doultabad have been each sanctioned 15 teaching and non-teaching posts, along with Rs.7 crore each for infrastructure. However, sanctioning of posts in remaining newly sanctioned colleges, continues to remain in limbo.
Further, out of 405 sanctioned principal posts, only 358 are presently filled. Around 60 posts are lying vacant due to recent retirements. The department has sent a file seeking approval from the government for promoting eligible and senior most junior lecturers as principals.
“If the State government sanctions teaching and non-teaching staff in the newly GJCs we will be recruiting guest lecturers in such positions. A seniority list for principal promotions is ready and we will shortly give promotions. Further, we will also promote eligible junior lecturers as degree lecturers,” said a senior official.
