Hyderabad: A round table meeting of student unions at Sundarayya Vigyan Kendra, convened to demand implementation of the High Court verdict on Group-1 exams, was disrupted on Tuesday when police arrested BRSV State president Gellu Srinivas Yadav, vice president Thunga Balu and others. They were taken into custody and shifted to the Abids Police Station.
The meeting had been called by multiple student organisations to chart out future action on the Group-1 issue. The student unions, including BRS and PDSU, scheduled to participate in the meeting, condemned the arrests and vowed to continue their agitation until justice was done for Group-1 aspirants.
Speaking before his arrest, Gellu Srinivas Yadav accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of curbing the democratic rights of candidates.
“Even a peaceful, permitted meeting is being disrupted. This is proof of the government’s authoritarian rule,” he said, likening the arrests to Emergency-era tactics.
He questioned why the State was so wary of students’ organisations meeting. He urged all political parties and civil society organisations to condemn the Congress government’s anti-democratic policies.
