Hyderabad: Popular children’s TV show, Sesame Street, has taken it upon itself to spread awareness about anti-racism and bullying with a new song, ‘Proud of Your Eyes’.
The new song features the Japanese-American character, Alan, who is the owner of Hooper’s Store on Sesame Street, African-American Wes who reassures their Filipino friend Analyn when she tells them about being bullied at a park.
Analyn tells them, a boy at the park called her eyes ‘slanty’ and said she was ugly. Alan shares a similar experience and tells her that her “eyes are perfect as they are”. The two characters, Wes and Alan then sing, “Your eyes tell the story of your family, they show where you come from and how you come to be. The color, the shape and the size, should always make you proud of your eyes.”
The song ends on a happy note as the trio hugs and works on family scrapbooks. It makes Analyn reveal that her eyes are similar to her beautiful grandmother, Lola.
The new songs are part of Sesame Workshop’s Coming Together initiative, which aims to help children understand and celebrate different ethnicities and cultures. Last week, the 51-year-old show focused on Wes who was teased when he brought curry chicken for lunch at school in their video.
