West Indies face Test cricket crisis after 0-3 Australia whitewash and record-low collapse
The West Indies cricket team faces renewed scrutiny after a 0-3 Test series defeat to Australia, with poor batting and overreliance on T20 formats blamed. Cricket legends have been called in to revive the side amid growing fan disappointment.
Hyderabad: One of the saddest sights in the world of cricket is to see the passionate West Indian fans, most of them still glued to the radio sets, listening to the live commentary in the stands in the Caribbean Islands and watching the decline of the once-formidable West Indies team in Test cricket.
Have Windies forgotten the art of batting in a Test match? Well, it seems so given the 0-3 drubbing against Australia in the just-concluded home series and this despite the bowlers putting up stand-out performances and giving West Indies chance to win each of the three Tests.
So, it was not just a case of frittering away the opportunities that have come their way in the three-match Test series against Aussies. But, clear lack of discipline with the willow which was the root cause. And, this is not an overnight phenomenon. The over-emphasis on T-20 format, perhaps, has the biggest impact on the West Indies, of all the teams.
Blame it on domestic structure either by way of standards or the kind of pitches they are preparing or many of the cricketers being not just good enough to play Test cricket.
Yes, it is sad that West Indies hit a new low, bowled out for the second lowest score, 27, in Test history against Australia, ironically, in the year 2025 when it was commemorating the inaugural 1975 ODI World Cup victory.
And, not surprisingly, the greatest captain of West Indies ever, Clive Lloyd, along with the legends Sir Vivian Richards and Brian Lara have been requested by the Windies cricket authorities to find a way out from the mess.
What was most surprising was that the slump had come after a sensational performance on the last Australian tour when the West Indies, then hardly tipped to even do well, levelled the series, facilitated by that stunning bowling by Shamar Joseph in the 2024 Brisbane Test. And, the drawn Test series, a feat by itself, in Pakistan later on was thought to be the launchpad for what was expected to be a revival of sorts.
But, those performances turned out to be misplaced notions. And, the outrage was understandable, prompting Lloyd to say that the team badly needed someone like Larry Gomes in the batting order.
Here, one would love to recall the famous comment of West Hall when he spent a few minutes in the Doordarshan commentary box during the 1983 series in India when the home team got drubbed, just after India won the 1983 World Cup.
“Larry plays and misses, plays and misses. But stays there, that is important for us,” Hall said. But, again, Gomes was in a star-studded batting line-up which instilled fear among the best of bowling attacks in the 80s.
From whatever one saw during the recent West Indies-Australia Test series, it is pretty obvious that the batters looked out of sorts and just didn’t show the willingness to put up even a fight. It was an abject surrender, a far cry from the days when many teams feared facing them.
“We have to find ways of fighting, occupying the crease, and staying in for long periods to wear down the bowlers. We have not been doing that. Obviously, the mental side of our game needs to improve. We have to go back to the basics,” Lloyd said.
Will all this happen? The waiting game for the die-hard West Indian fan is clearly on. And as they say, hope is the eternal motivating factor!
