Why your eyes look tired even after eight hours of sleep, according to dermatologists

Getting enough sleep does not always prevent tired-looking eyes. Dermatologists say dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and hollow eyes can stem from genetics, ageing, allergies and lifestyle factors, while simple remedies may only offer temporary improvement rather than treating the underlying cause.

You got your eight hours of sleep, yet you wake up looking like you barely slept at all. If you’ve ever wondered why your eyes still appear tired, you’re not alone. The answer isn’t always a lack of sleep.

Dermatologists have been sharing on social media that the area under your eyes can reveal more about your body than you might think. Different under-eye concerns can have different causes, many of which have little to do with how long you slept.

Puffy under-eye bags, for instance, may be linked to excess salt intake, allergies or fluid retention. Dark circles are often blamed on late nights, but they can also be caused by genetics, naturally thin skin or pigmentation. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes are commonly associated with ageing, repeated rubbing of the eyes and years of sun exposure. Hollow or sunken eyes, meanwhile, are usually the result of a gradual loss of volume beneath the eyes.

While there is no overnight solution, a few simple habits can help your eyes look more refreshed. A cold compress can reduce puffiness, staying hydrated may minimise fluid retention and using an eye cream can temporarily improve the appearance of the under-eye area. Most importantly, these are quick fixes, they may help you look better, but they don’t treat the underlying cause.
