Hyderabad: Fisheries Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Saturday announced that the State government was working out modalities for setting up fisheries marketing societies to provide better marketing facilities for the fishermen and ensure them remunerative prices for their catch. He said arrangements were being made to purchase fish directly from these fisheries marketing societies through the Telangana State Fishermen Cooperative Federation and evade middlemen who were exploiting the fishermen to sell the fish for lower prices.
The Minister thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for directing the Panchayat Raj department to hand over the tanks under it’s purview to the Fisheries department in rural areas. He said efforts will be made to transfer all water bodies under the purview of the municipalities to the Fisheries department.
Chairing the Fishermen Coordination Committee meeting held at MCR HRD Institute of Telangana State here, Srinivas Yadav said the Coordination Committee was constituted to resolve long pending issues pertaining to the fishermen. He assured that the State government will take all measures to protect the rights of fishermen in the State and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had initiated the free fishlings distribution for benefit of all castes among the fishermen. The State government is releasing about 93 crore fishlings and 10 crore shrimp into various water bodies in the State this year. He urged the fishermen community to work in unison to utilise the government schemes and improve their living standards.
The Minister asked the committee members to conduct field study for in-depth understanding of the issues being faced by the fishermen in the State and make recommendations for improving the conditions. He directed Fisheries Commissioner Latchiram Bhukya to take steps for resolving the pending issues as per the existing norms. He assured to take up creation of new fishermen societies and also carry out societies membership registration in areas where there are no objections. The next coordination meeting will be held on October 11 after the Coordination Committee completes study tour in the districts of Nirmal, Adilabad and Sangareddy.
Rajya Sabha member Banda Prakash, MLA Mutha Gopal, Animal Husbandry Secretary Anita Rajendra, Fisheries Commissioner Latchiram Bhukya, Gangaputra Joint Action Committee chairman Deeti Mallaiah, Mudiraj Sangham representative Choppari Shankar and other members of the Coordination Committee also participated in the meeting.
