Hyderabad: A fatal act of wrong-side driving on the busy AMB flyover along the Hafeezpet-Gachibowli stretch claimed two lives and left another person injured on Friday, highlighting the dangers posed by motorists flouting basic traffic rules.
According to the police, the accident occurred when a scooter carrying two persons entered the flyover from the wrong direction and continued travelling against the flow of traffic around 7.45 am. Moments later, the scooter crashed head-on into a Royal Enfield motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that the scooter was mangled and both its riders were thrown onto the road.
The victims, identified as Srikanth and Vittal, suffered multiple grievous injuries with heavy bleeding and died on the spot. The Royal Enfield rider, identified as Vinod, who was wearing a helmet suffered injuries and was shifted to a nearby private hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Police officials who rushed to the spot found that the scooter had been travelling on the wrong side of the flyover, leaving the oncoming motorcyclist with little time to react and avoid the collision.
Meanwhile, the crash disrupted traffic on the busy stretch for some time, as the rescue operation continued.
The Gachibowli police are investigating to ascertain the exact sequence of events and determine how the scooter gained access to the wrong carriageway. The CCTV footage covering the spot is being analysed.
Officials are also examining whether there were any other contributing factors behind the accident.
