Hyderabad: The neurosurgeons at Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet, have successfully removed a large tumour from the brain of a 42-year-old woman Chandramma, a sanitation worker in Kodada Municipal Corporation, Suryapet, by employing novel Intraoperative 3T MRI (IMRI) neuronavigation technique.
The sanitation employee was recently referred to Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet after a CT scan in a local hospital revealed that she had a large brain tumour, a press release said. Further tests by Neurosurgeons Dr. Raveesh Sunkara and Dr. Rama Krishna Chowdhary in the state-of-the-art neuro-cath lab revealed she had a tumour that occupied a large part of her brain.
Intraoperative 3T MRI (IMRI) and neuronavigation were used to remove the tumour, as there was risk of affecting major nerves in the brain during surgery, on September 9 last year and Chandramma was able to recover quickly without complications.
Director, Yashoda Hospitals, Dr. Pavan Gorukanti said that IMRI plays a key role to overcome small margins of error while removing brain tumours because they give ultra-precise guidance during surgeries. With IMRI technique, a scan can be performed during the course of the surgery so that changes can be made immediately and avoid repeating the surgery again.
