Warangal: Matwada police on Tuesday arrested a youth and his friend for staging a fake kidnap to extort money from his parents.
Inspector of Police N Karunakar said the accused, Adit Soni, a businessman from Vasavi Colony, and his associate Mohammed Yakub, an auto-rickshaw driver from Pochamma Maidan, were apprehended at Hunter Road.
During interrogation, Soni admitted that he had incurred debts of Rs 8 lakh–Rs 9 lakh through online betting. To cover his losses, he conspired to extort money from his father by enacting a kidnap drama with Yakub’s help.
As part of the plan, Soni called his wife and father claiming to have been kidnapped, while Yakub posed as the kidnapper and demanded ransom. The duo stayed in a lodge in Hanamkonda while staging the drama.
Acting on credible information, police nabbed them and seized mobile phones, an auto-rickshaw and other material. The accused are in custody and further investigation is in progress, the Inspector added.
