New Delhi: In the 1xBet illegal betting app case, Bengali actor Ankush Hazra and former MP Mimi Chakraborty submitted documents to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in New Delhi on Tuesday, an official source said. The source added that former cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa, and actor Sonu Sood are likely to be questioned later this month.
The Bengali actor and politician were asked to share personal documents and were questioned in relation to endorsements they had done for the betting app, the source noted.
The case is linked to alleged money laundering uncovered by the ED in the operations of the betting platform 1xBet.
Advocate Shashi Kaushik, representing Ankush Hazra and Mimi Chakraborty, said: “These are basic documents, nothing significant. These are the same documents everyone is supposed to carry, and they have carried them. Whatever contacts they have, the authorities are trying to verify. It is not an interrogation, but simply the ED’s routine way of conducting an investigation.”
Sources in the ED said Uthappa has been asked to appear on September 22, Yuvraj Singh on September 23, and Sonu Sood on September 24.
Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan was also questioned earlier regarding alleged money laundering tied to advertisements for an unauthorised gaming app. Dhawan reportedly faced hours of questioning in Delhi about his advertising contract with 1xBet.
Former cricketer Suresh Raina was also recently examined by the ED in the case.
The 1xBet India website claims to offer multiple sports betting options to registered users, including games like Aviator Game Online, cricket betting, and online casino slots, with payments accepted through Telegram.
The Cyprus-headquartered company, one of the largest online casinos, has sponsored football teams in Spain and France. Following investigations into financial irregularities, it was forced to withdraw from markets in the UK, US, Russia, Spain, and France.
The controversy over Dhawan’s association with 1xBet comes soon after the storm around the Mahadev Satta App, which had engaged celebrities including Ranbir Kapoor, Boman Irani, Hina Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor. The ED probe into Mahadev revealed a ₹5,000-crore hawala racket operating in the UAE and Pakistan.
