Nalgonda: A black basalt polished stone axe of the Neolithic period, dating back to 4,000 BCE, was found at Gundrampalli in Chityal mandal, Nalgonda.
Noted archaeologist Dr E Sivanagireddy said the prehistoric stone tool, measuring about 15 cm in length and 3 cm in width, carved out of black basalt stone, was found near Nagulakatta in Gundrampalli and Epur villages.
It was spotted during a survey conducted on Saturday by Dr Reddy as part of an awareness programme called ‘Preserve Heritage for Posterity’.
He said the stone tool indicated the affiliation of Gundrampalli to the Neolithic period. He added that there were five naga (serpent) sculptures belonging to the Kakatiya period at the spot where the prehistoric stone tool was found.
Amarnath Yadlapalli, a heritage activist, also participated in the programme.
