70 species of migratory, resident birds spotted in Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary

Warangal: More than 70 species of the both migratory and resident birds like Red crested Pochard, Painted stork, Open billed stork, jacanas, Garganey and others were spotted in the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary during a bird walk organised by the Forest Department on February 19 and 20, according to District Forest Officer (DFO) Arpana Syal.
The bird watching and bird survey programme was conducted at the historic Pakhal Lake and nearby water bodies in the district. Around 15 bird watchers and nature lovers from Hyderabad and Warangal participated in the walk and identified more than 70 species of birds including the Pelican water bird that was spotted for the first time in the Pakhal.
On Sunday, after the nature walk and bird watching, plantation of saplings was taken up in Pakhal Biodiversity Park by all the participants including students from Government Sainik School, Narsampet. The participants shared their experiences and stressed the need to organise more such awareness campaigns on a regular basis. Arpana Syal handed over certificates to the participants on the occasion.
She said the department was taking several steps to protect the rich biodiversity in Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary besides developing the lake as a prominent tourist spot in erstwhile Warangal district.
