Hyderabad: Cardiologists at Malla Reddy Narayana Multispecialty Hospital (MRNMH) have successfully performed Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) on 80-year-old woman. The elderly patient, Kausalya, was admitted to the hospital with severe breathlessness and was diagnosed with accelerated hypertension, acute Left Ventricular Failure (LVF) and symptoms of heart failure.

The doctors immediately stabilised the patient and later decided to take up aortic valve replacement procedure. “Due to her age and other morbidities, we conducted minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure. She underwent the surgery and was discharged in a very stable condition,” senior cardiologists Dr. Kamal Kumar Chawla and Dr Prakash Ajmeera, who conducted the procedure, said.

The TAVR is a minimally invasive heart procedure to replace a thickened aortic valve, which is located between left lower heart chamber and aorta, the main artery. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, it restores blood flow and reduces the signs and symptoms of aortic valve stenosis like chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting and fatigue, doctors said.
