Adilabad: In a novel gesture, an Adilabad town-based lensman sponsored 500 clay bowls to be placed in various areas to quench the thirst of birds in the wake of summer. The gesture comes on the occasion of World Sparrow Day on Saturday.

Collector Sikta Patnaik, who was the chief guest at the event, distributed the bowls to the residents of ward number 43 here. Speaking on the occasion, Sikta said everyone should strive hard to protect various bird species that were on the verge of extinction. She was all praise for the photographer-nature lover Lingampalli Krishna for coming forward to donate the bowls. She expressed happiness to take part in the World Sparrow Day celebrations and distribution of the bowls.

Stating that the government was implementing ‘Telanganaku Harita Haram’ to increase green cover in the State and to protect wildlife, she sought the participation of the public in the massive plantation drive and protection of environment. She requested the citizens to place similar bowls across the district to quench the thirst of birds.

In-charge District Forest Officer Chandrasekhar Rao stated that birds play a vital role in agriculture. He said that the avian community would help farmers by feeding on insects that destroy various crops. He recollected that people used to create nests in their homes in the ancient times. He urged the public to provide shelter, food and drinking water to the birds.

Krishna gifted a photograph of a rare owl to the Collector for gracing the occasion. A barber by profession, Krishna developed a penchant for wildlife photography, in particular, capturing photographs of birds. He spotted many rare birds dwelling in the wild of the district in recent times.

Former Adilabad Municipal Chairperson R Maneesha and Councilor Kalala Srinivas were present.
