Adilabad: World Sparrows Day was observed on the premises of a government primary school at Gudirevu village in Dandepalli mandal in Mancherial district on Thursday.
Led by headmaster B Buchanna, teachers tried to raise the understanding of the students over the important role of sparrows in biodiversity and environment. They created nestles using papers, vessels with plastic and pots made of clay meant for shelter, food and drinking water of the winged wonders. Meanwhile, a barber-turned wildlife photographer Lingampalli Krishna from Adilabad delved on the pivotal role of the sparrows in biodiversity at a programme held to mark the World Sparrows Day at the government Arts and Science Degree College in Adilabad town. He said that the sparrows were facing threat of extinction from increasing usage of fertilizers and pesticides on crops by farmers.
He said that the birds that feed on the grains in the crops were being killed. He opined felling of trees was affecting habitation of the bird species. He urged the public to take the responsibility of protecting the sparrows by reducing the application of fertilizers and pesticides. He wanted people to stop cutting trees to revive the glory of the sparrows.
