Adilabad tenant farmer dies by suicide amid debt and crop yield concerns
A 66-year-old tenant farmer in Adilabad died by suicide amid concerns over loan repayment and a potentially poor cotton yield. The death takes the district's reported farmer suicide toll to four in 10 days, prompting renewed calls for government support.
Adilabad: Another tenant farmer died by suicide as he was distressed over his inability to repay loans at Kachkanti village in Adilabad Rural mandal on Thursday. With the latest suicide, the district saw four forced deaths of farmers in a gap of 10 days.
Police said that Bolli Rajeshwar (66) from the village attempted to die by taking the drastic step at his agriculture field on Tuesday. He was immediately shifted to RIMS-Adilabad. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment in the evening.
Rajeshwar raised a cotton crop in 3 acres of land leased out from a resident of the village. He availed a crop loan of Rs 1.35 lakh from Telangana Grameena Bank. He was depressed fearing the yield would be low and he would not be able to clear his debts.
Dattu, son of the farmer, lodged a complaint with the police. A case has been registered. Investigations are underway.
Three farmers including a tenant one died by suicide in different parts of the district from October 7 to 9, underscoring deepening agrarian crisis. Farmer organizations demanded the government to take steps to support the distressed farming community. They said that the yield of cotton and paddy had declined due to adverse climatic conditions.
