Hyderabad: Walkers and residents of Sanathnagar have raised concerns over a persistent foul smell emanating from the water body in KLN Park, attributing it to algae covering the lake. They complain that the unpleasant odour was making it difficult for visitors to enjoy the park, especially during the early morning and evening hours.

The presence of algae is believed to have increased over the past few weeks, leading to further deterioration of water quality. Due to recent heavy rains, the water body at KLN Park is filled to the brim resembling a green carpet.

Over 1,200 daily walkers who visit the park for walking, workouts, Yoga and jogging, complain about the stench from the water body. Local women from nearly half a dozen residential colonies, who have traditionally celebrated the Bathukamma festival at the water body in the park over the decades, are now fearful due to its condition.

The KLN Park, named after former minister of the united Andhra Pradesh, Kanjerla Lakshmi Narayana Yadav, is spread over 3 acres and popularly known as Mini KBR Park. It has landscapes, greenery, walkways, an open gym, and other facilities and was also selected for Shallow Aquifer Management (SAM) to increase the groundwater table as a pilot project in the city. However, the water body has turned into a dumping ground with discarded water bottles, food waste, and other refuse, resulting in floating debris.

Residents and walkers express their frustration over GHMC officials’ negligence in maintaining the cleanliness of the lake. They urge the authorities to clean the water body and ensure the celebration of the Bathukamma festival.
