Hyderabad: Rising to the occasion by extending a helping hand to thousands of people affected by the second wave of Covid-19 and the lockdown, the Telangana government on Tuesday began serving free meals through its Annapurna canteens across the capital city region.
The Annapurna Food Scheme, which originally envisages hot and hygienic meals at Rs 5, was decided to be made free and distributed through 250 centres across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits based on instructions from Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao.
The meals, made up of 400 gm of rice, vegetable curry, sambar and pickle, were given to over 45,000 people on the first day itself.
“Based on the instructions of Minister @, the Annapurna meals is being supplied free with immediate effect until further orders in all the 250 centres in @GHMCOnline,” MAUD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar tweeted, while Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi said the free food scheme would be continued until further orders.
The meals, prepared mostly in two kitchens operated by the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation, are a boon, especially for daily wage labourers, hawkers, shelter home residents and construction workers including
migrant labour, who otherwise find it difficult to find food with no work and no hotels open during the lockdown.
One of the biggest free public feeding programmes in the country, the GHMC-run scheme had served more than 5 crore meals across Telangana during the lockdown in 2020, winning praise from even the UNESCO.
