Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Apartment Residents Welfare Association (VARWA) and resident colonies association NIVAS on Wednesday jointly organised Signature campaign on a flexi banner at Seethammadhara Rythu Bazaar and at 80 ft road junction, Akkayyapalem opposing the imposition of capital value based property tax and User charges on garbage and other civic services.

Inaugurating the campaign at Seethammadhara, former District Medical and Health Officer P Ramarao said it was meaningless to levy property tax on capital value of assets because capital value had no relevance to the regular income. “How can the govt charge tax on an artificially declared capital value which does not result in rise of income? If the state wants to increase its income, it has to extract taxes from the tax evaders and tax evading corporate companies and explore other ways,” he said.

Inaugurating the same campaign at 80ft road junction, Akkayyapalem, BL Narayana, Vice President, People for India Forum condemned the change of system of property taxation and said that an accumulated amount of Rs.95 crore of Library Cess was lying with the GVMC without being remitted to the Department of Libraries. Libraries in the city were in a dilapidated condition, he noted and demanded the GVMC to remit the amount to the Library department to take up renovation of the libraries. Without this, there was no fun in collecting Library cess of 8%, he remarked.
