Hyderabad: Captain Ashu Malik, leading Dabang Delhi in the Pro Kabaddi League, said the presence of stalwarts like Fazel Atrachali and Surjeet Singh would make a big difference to the team’s campaign in the ongoing Season 12 being held in Visakhapatnam.
In a chat with ‘Telangana Today’, Malik said that the duo had 10-11 seasons of experience. “For Dabang Delhi, it is as much about trust as it is about tactics. Even though I am the captain, they take big responsibilities. When a raider is off the mat for seven or eight minutes, senior players ensure the team stays composed and knows how to handle situations,” he said.
Head coach Joginder Narwal, who led Delhi to its maiden title as captain, echoes this sentiment. “Fazel and Surjeet are very disciplined. They lead by example, guide the juniors, and share insights. Their presence makes a big difference because young players benefit from their experience,” Joginder remarks.
Ashu admits captaincy has brought out his best. “The team trusted me with this role, so I give my 100% every single minute. I never lose focus and always keep my teammates motivated,” he says. Joginder agrees, calling Ashu “a well-disciplined boy who plays for the team, not for himself.”
The new PKL format, allowing eight teams in the playoffs, excites Ashu. “It’s a great move. Sometimes, despite doing well, a couple of losses keep you out. This rule keeps the competition alive till the end,” he says.
Both coach and captain credit PKL for changing the face of the sport. “Earlier, people called it mitti kabaddi. There wasn’t this kind of fame or money. Today, PKL has brought recognition and respect,” Joginder says. Ashu adds: “Families feel proud, fans recognize you, and it feels amazing when people want pictures with you.”
With a balanced squad and strong leadership on and off the mat, Delhi’s sights are firmly set on another title.
