Karimnagar: Backward Classes (BC) leaders stressed the need to launch an agitation to achieve 42 percent reservation for the community and demanded that the Union government include the issue in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
BC leaders from the erstwhile Karimnagar district took part in the BC Rajyadikara Sabha held in a function hall here on Sunday.
Addressing the meeting as chief guest, retired IAS officer Chiranjeevulu urged leaders to take BC ideology to every household. Stating that the community had been neglected in all fields for the last 75 years, he said it was time to shed feelings of inferiority and fight for rights through a strong agitation.
He said he had written books and several articles in newspapers to create awareness about BC rights, while also spreading the ideology in rural areas.
Recalling that BC leaders had earlier organised a meeting at Taj Krishna, Hyderabad, demanding a caste census, he said the State government had agreed to conduct it bowing to their pressure.
Reiterating the demand for 42 percent reservation, he said the subject must be placed in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to ensure lasting protection.
Speaking at the meeting, BC leader Sabbani Venkat said justice would be possible only if a BC leader became a party president or Chief Minister, which would also ensure representation for leaders from interior areas.
He added that it was not possible to trust political parties or governments until the 42 percent BC reservation issue was safeguarded in the Ninth Schedule.
