Adilabad: A 78-year-old tribal woman who sought warmth from a bonfire was burnt alive when a hut in which she was living accidentally caught fire at Gopalpur village in Indervelly mandal on Sankranti festival on Thursday. The incident came to light on Friday.
Indervelli Sub-Inspector N Nagnath said the deceased was Kanaka Renuka Bai, a Raj Gond widow of Gopalpur village.
Renuka was charred to death as the flames engulfed the hut that was set up by her son to protect their cotton field. The bonfire the woman used to warm her body caught the cotton produce harvested at the hut resulting in the mishap. The woman is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Shambu, the victim’s son, was not present at the hut at the time of the incident. He returned to the agriculture field only to find the charred body of his mother. Shambu informed local police who rushed to the spot and brought out the mortal remains.
Based on a complaint by Shambu, a case was registered under Section 174 of Indian Penal Code.
On December 30 last, Ade Rukmini Bai (70), wife of Kondu Mera, was burnt alive when the blanket she used to protect herself from the cold accidentally caught fire at Peddapet village in Bheemini mandal of Mancherial district.
