Hyderabad: The BRS has condemned the arrest of civil rights activist Professor G Haragopal at Mylaram in Nagarkurnool district on Monday, when he went to express solidarity with the villagers protesting against illegal mining. They demanded the immediate release of Prof Haragopal and others, urging the government to address the villagers’ grievances instead of silencing dissent.

In a statement, former Minister and senior BRS MLA T Harish Rao called the arrest inhumane and undemocratic. He criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Congress government for stifling voices of those who are fighting on behalf of the people, after promising to deliver a people’s governance in the State.

He said the Congress rule was reminding people of the Emergency era, with its fences, restrictions and arrests. “Is this the Indiramma Rajyam you promised? The government is turning a blind eye to villagers’ concerns about illegal mining,” he stated. He said if such conditions prevail in the Chief Minister’s home district, one could imagine the situation in rest of the State.

BRS leader and former Minister S Niranjan Reddy too condemned the arrest of Prof Haragopal and other activists of the people’s organisations and termed it dictatorial. He appealed to the intellectuals who had been supporting the Congress blindly, to get out of their disillusions and condemn such acts.
