Hyderabad: The BRS launched a fierce counterattack on Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, accusing him of misusing police force as a political tool to suppress dissent while failing to address the alarming rise in crimes against women. The party demanded that the government withdraw these illegal cases immediately.
Former Minister and senior MLA T Harish Rao condemned the spate of police cases filed against BRS leaders, students and social media activists who questioned the government’s actions over the University of Hyderabad (UoH) land issue. He demanded that the Congress government refrain from such pressure tactics and immediately withdraw its illegal cases against BRS cadre. “How many people will Revanth Reddy arrest for asking questions? Is this the Indiramma Rajyam that Congress promised? Is this democracy or a dictatorship?” he asked.
Harish Rao said Bandameedi Ram, a former sarpanch from Nalgonda, was illegally detained for speaking out against UoH land issue on social media. “We are not afraid of your threats. The BRS will confront you on your failure to deliver every promise made to farmers, women, students, the differently abled, and the elderly,” he added. He warned Congress that mass arrests and silencing voices will not stop them from exposing government failures. “Revanth Reddy can jail our leaders but not the truth,” they declared.
In a separate press conference, BRS leader and former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar said that Telangana police are now serving notices to his party leaders, including Dileep Konatham and Manne Krishank, under pressure from the Chief Minister’s Office. “The police are being reduced to political agents. Meanwhile, the State is reeling under an epidemic of crimes against women,” he charged.
Citing four rape incidents within a week, including the assault of a German national and horrific crimes in Sangareddy, Medchal, and Nagarkurnool, Praveen Kumar lambasted Revanth Reddy for failing to even hold a review as Home Minister. He said Revanth Reddy reviewed UoH lands but not crimes against women. He also charged the government with neglecting women’s safety and weakening the initiatives of the previous BRS government, including SHE teams.
“If rapists can walk free, while those who speak for the people are jailed, what kind of democracy is this? What is the State Women Commission doing?” he asked.
