Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan raised strong objections to the dumping yard proposed by the Congress government at Bandravirala and demanded its immediate withdrawal. He stated that the dumping yard falls within the Musi River catchment area, jeopardising the government’s Musi River Rejuvenation initiative.
“The BRS is opposed to the proposal and will launch a statewide agitation if the government does not withdraw it,” he warned while addressing a protest at the Ranga Reddy district collectorate organised under the leadership of former Ibrahimpatnam MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy.
The BRS MLC said the government was attempting to convert 494 acres of prime government land into a dumping yard. He charged the Congress government with bypassing mandatory procedures by issuing government orders without consulting local Gram Sabhas or undertaking environmental studies. He alleged that local elected representatives had failed to safeguard the interests of the affected villagers.
Questioning the rationale behind the proposal, Sravan said the government could not claim to spend thousands of crores on cleaning the Musi River while simultaneously planning a waste disposal facility in its catchment area. He argued that the land was better suited for industrial, educational and healthcare infrastructure than for garbage disposal.
The BRS leader stated that the proposal would adversely affect residents of 16 surrounding villages and compared it to the environmental problems faced by people living near the Jawaharnagar dumping yard. He accused the government of ignoring its electoral promise to relocate the Jawaharnagar facility and instead attempting to create another dumping yard close to residential areas.
Reaffirming the BRS’s support for the agitation, Sravan said the party would continue to stand with the affected residents until the Bandravirala dumping yard proposal was withdrawn. He warned that the BRS was prepared to intensify the movement through protests, road blockades and statewide demonstrations if the government failed to reconsider its decision.
