Hyderabad: Ahead of the Assembly session, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) staged a protest at the Amaraveerula Stupam in Gun Park on Friday, highlighting the acute shortage of urea across Telangana. Party leaders and workers displayed empty urea bags as a symbolic protest, raising slogans against the Congress government.
Demanding that the Congress government which cannot supply fertiliser to farmers should resign immediately, BRS leaders accused the State of failing farmers during the festive season. They said farmers were being forced to stand in long queues even on Ganesh Chaturthi, many of them drenched in rain, in their desperate attempt to procure urea.
Working president KT Rama Rao said the crisis was a direct consequence of the Congress’ failure. “During KCR’s 10 years in office, not once did farmers face such a shortage of fertiliser. Today, farmers are forced to line up with shoes and Aadhaar cards, waiting for urea. This is the betrayal of farmers by Revanth Reddy,” he said.
Rama Rao demanded that the Assembly be convened for at least 15 days, stating that BRS was prepared to debate any issue brought by the government.
“We are ready to discuss everything, from agriculture to irrigation, from fee reimbursement to the failures of the six guarantees. Let the House be a platform for real discussion on the hardships of farmers and students, not selective debates suiting the government,” he said.
The BRS leader said over 600 farmers had committed suicide in recent months and nearly 75 lakh farmers were suffering due to lack of fertiliser and poor support from the Congress administration. He stressed that the Assembly must hold a detailed debate on agricultural distress, crop losses caused by heavy rains, and the government’s inability to deliver on its promises.
He asserted that BRS was ready to present the record of K Chandrashekhar Rao’s welfare and irrigation projects, including the world’s largest lift irrigation scheme, Kaleshwaram. On the issue of disqualification of rebel MLAs, he said, “The process is already underway. Let us see what decision the Speaker takes.”
He also dismissed the PC Ghose Commission as “not a commission of inquiry but a Congress PCC Ghose Commission”, saying his party was prepared to counter the government on that as well.
